There are many reasons that responsible individuals would want to pay their PayPal credit balance with a credit card. For one, PayPal credit is the default payment method and they may have wanted to select another funding source, but accidentally failed to. This was my situation. After this slip up I went to pay my PayPal Credit balance with a credit card and soon learned this was not possible. So I thought. Here’s how to pay PayPal Credit balance with credit card.

Note that you will have to close your PayPal credit account to pay your balance with a credit card, but if you accidentally used this service and this doesn’t bother you as it didn’t me then simply call 1-866-528-3733 and don’t dance around it; let the representative know that you want to pay your PayPal Credit balance with credit card and they CAN issue this one-time transaction letting you pay your PayPal Credit balance with a credit card and close your account. Great, I didn’t like Bill Me Later and I don’t like PayPal credit nor do I remember opting in.

Unfortunately, you can not accomplish this online and you cannot pay your balance without closing your PayPal Credit account. A welcome change for me.

One bonus about the new PayPal user interface is that it is now easy to change your default billing source, so that you can potentially avoid this headache.

How to Change PayPal Default Payment Method

  1. Log into PayPal
  2. Click your settings gear or pin wheel in the top right:How to Pay PayPal Credit Balance with Credit Card
  3. Under “Payment Settings” click “edit:”Change PayPal Default Payment Method
  4. Under “Paying Online” choose “Choose a payment method at checkout:”Change Default PayPal Payment Method

That’s how to pay PayPal Credit balance with a credit card as well as change your default funding source. Hope this saves a headache knowing it’s possible.

    This didnt work. They would not accept a credit card even if you tell them you are closing an account.

      Just close PP credit; not the entire account. Also, it’s representative specific, so you could try to call back and talk to a different rep. I didn’t want PP credit so it was a double bonus to close it.

    I have credit card that is interest free at the moment and want to pay my pay pal credit to avoid interest but they cut me off before I get to speak to a person.
